Physical-Mechanical Properties of Stone Masonry of Gjirokastër, Albania

In addition to reinforced concrete and steel buildings, a large part of the existing building stock in Europe is made stone masonry. Prediction structural behavior requires development systematic material characterization mechanical properties details (units, arrangement, bonding, inter-connection). This study aims analyze physical stones historical city Gjirokastër, Albania, known also as Stone City. A thorough investigation regional quarries was performed, collected samples were cut into regular prismatic specimens for further analysis. The experimental campaign consisted determination flexural strength compressive strength, water absorption, porosity, specific gravity well analysis masonry material, using MQI (Masonry Quality Index) method. test results showed that there scattering values such varying from 20 115 MPa 8 25 MPa. However, revealed satisfactory performance, based on frequent, respect good construction practices (i.e., rules art) Gjirokastër.
